“Comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable”
-Finley Peter Dunne

I like a challenge and I believe in change; simply put, I was bored after raising my four children. I wanted to take the success and passion from my business career, helping people solve financial problems, into a different vocation. This career change created personal growth, and “afflicted the comfortable”. With an undergraduate business degree in Operational Management, the crossover from the business world to the mental health world came through studying Choice Theory, at the core of both Lead Management and Reality Therapy. I became a Certified Reality Therapist (CRT) prior to completing my master’s degree in Community Counseling from Xavier University. This unique insight, having lived in both worlds, enriches my work with my clients.

As a counselor, I have worked in both community mental health settings, and with a private psychiatric practice. I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, couples, and families in both group and individual counseling sessions. My experience includes supporting my clients through court cases with many of the county and municipal court systems in our area, and with a probate court. I have also provided probation counseling services for clients who were referred for mental health and/or addiction treatment, anger management, or domestic violence therapy.

Everything Happens For a Reason: I am independently licensed as both a Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), and as a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor for the treatment of addictions (LICDC, ICADC). My passion is practicing as an Integrated Addiction and Mental Health Counselor. Coming to Compass Point has given me a unique opportunity to do that, and to reunite with my first supervisor, Sheri Casbeer. I am excited to be a member of the Addiction Recovery Team; a team of therapists who share my same vision of the recovery process.

A Truly Happy Person is One Who Can Enjoy the Scenery While On a Detour: I believe that my job is to join with my clients, wherever they are at on their journey; I help them get back to their “main roads”. I collaborate closely with them, listen and respond honestly, without judgment, but also “keep it real”. I strive to be that one person they can trust and rely on for truth and support. My focus is holistic; paying attention to all the areas and aspects of my clients is essential in helping them to bring balance back into their life and create overall wellness. I believe in keeping a sense of humor alive while we do this work. I want my clients to know that healing is possible; while it has moments that are difficult, it needs moments that can be enjoyed, too. Balancing the work, that helps you stay with it; that’s important for real and lasting change.

Variety is the Spice of Life: My love of learning keeps me constantly expanding my counseling skill set. Besides being trained in the more basic therapies (Cognitive Behavioral, Motivational Interviewing, Motivational Enhancement, Person Centered, Dialectical Behavior, etc.) and my certification in Reality Therapy, I continue to train in new therapies to add to my skill set. Why? Because people are all different, and I believe it is my responsibility to find the best therapy fit for each person and then be able to use it. I am currently working on obtaining my National Gambling License, and studying Structured Family Recovery. I believe in the power of education for positive change, and that goes for me, too!

“Many of us spend our whole lives running from feeling with the mistaken belief that you cannot bear the pain. But you have already borne the pain. What you have not done is feel all you are beyond the pain.”
Can you believe this quote is from the 1st century, St. Bartholomew? We still struggle with many of the same feelings that people faced back in the 1st century. I am someone who can help you “feel all you are beyond the pain.”

In-Network with the Following Insurance Carriers

Aetna, Anthem, Healthspan, Humana, MMO, PHCS/Multiplan, UBH, Optum

Mary is currently working with insurance companies to become credentialed as in-network with most managed care plans. If you feel like they are the best fit for you and still want to use your insurance while they are credentialing we can still bill towards insurance companies using your out of network benefits or we can forego insurance altogether and the front office can quote you their private pay rates when you call to schedule.
